The neural network architecture used in most applications is based on an antiquated understanding of the way neurons in humans work. McCulloch and Pitts described such a nerve cell as a simple logic gate which receives multiple signals from dendrites and in case the accumulated signal exceeds a certain threshold, the neuron generates an output signal.
